Exploring Wood as an Expressive Material – W1525

February 1, 2014

Posted In: Anderson Ranch General

Thomas Hucker

DATES: September 8 – 26, 2014

SKILL LEVEL: II – IV

CONCEPT: In this class we build either a case or table. We balance our “personal poetry” with issues of utility, exploring the interaction between these two facets of design. We create designs based on personal reflection or personal statement. Our focus may be on the object the case is intended to hold, or on a specific environment the piece will become a part of. We look for a unity of design in form, function and expression.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Wood. Solid wood construction, hand tools, machinery and hand joinery. Drawing, personal sketching and shop drawings. Basic bending, steam bending and laminations. Basic veneering, both flat work and molded plywood. Basic drawer and door construction.

ACTIVITIES: We start with designing, drawing and demonstrations in solid wood working. Discussions on design, technical demonstrations and one-on-one instruction during work time.

FACULTY: Tom studied at the Program in Artisanry (PIA) at Boston University and at the Domus Academy in Milan. His work is in the permanent collections at the Boston Museum of Fine Art, LA County Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, the Cooper Hewitt and the Renwick Gallery. He works full-time in his studio in Hoboken, N.J. www.thomashuckerstudio.com
